Munich
North of the Bavarian Alps and the River Isar, Munich is the capital of Bavaria, the largest federal state of Germany, and one of the most prosperous and expensive cities in Europe. Munich is a charming city that enjoys 800 years of its contradictions.
Munich was founded by Duke Henry the Lion in 1158. Over a century, the city became the seat of the Wittelsbach dynasty, who ruled the duchy and the kingdom of Bavaria until the end of the First World War. His influence is evident in the great concentration of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical architecture, which adorns the streets of Munich. The house of Wittelsbach patronage of the arts has been an important base for museums and galleries in Munich, known worldwide.
The city of Munich was the birthplace of the Nazi movement after World War I and became the scene of the first attempt by Hitler to take power on November 8, 1923. In addition, in 1938, Germany, Britain, France and Italy signed the Munich treaty that surrendered a large part of Czechoslovakia to the Nazis, an act of reconciliation that began preparations to the Second World War. The city was heavily bombed at the end of the war, but in the postwar years, the city was rebuilt by an intensive restoration program. Since then, Munich has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany.
Munich is one of the cultural centers of Germany, with a staggering array of museums, a vibrant arts scene and its world-famous Oktoberfest. Despite its name, Oktoberfest begins in late September and continues until the first week of October. With a strong cultural scene, rich art collections and excellent shopping, Munich has much more to offer than mere entertainment.
